For sale are these beautifully-made and earlier examples of Navajo First Nation Shadow Box jewelry. The sterling silver earrings are shaped and cutout into stylized bear claws, each having a small Turquoise cabochon in the center suspended with hook ear wires. The outer layers of sterling silver have a high polish with the inner layers having a purposeful patina to create the “shadow”. Stamped ‘sterling’ 925 hallmark. Circa 1950's-60's. In the Navajo tradition, according to the University of New Mexico, “Bears are believed to be spiritual guides and represent strength and self-knowledge. The Navajo also believe that bears have supernatural powers, including great healing powers….a symbol of deliberate action, introspection, soul searching, and insight.” The clean, handmade quality of these shows very good workmanship.
